Hump Day

Over halfway through the week now, sweet. Superman Returns opens tonight, but I don't know. I've never been a huge Superman fan, he's too indestructible. I guess Kryptonite is a major chink in his armor, but I always found his invulnerability a little boring. Aren't flawed people more interesting in general? How do you relate to Superman? He's smooth, handsome, bulletproof, and he can fucking fly. What a dick.

Batman was brooding, dark, vengeful, and distinctly human. Wolverine's a jerk most of the time, bub. Spiderman's a nerd. James Bond's a womanizer, alcoholic, and chain smoker. These guys were powerful, but had frailties and shortcomings that made them seem cooler. Understanding someone's flaws is part of what connects you to them, what turns you from a blind admirer into someone that can understand the other. Someone that can honestly care because you empathize about what they go through and you can see a little of yourself in their character and actions.

Anyway, I'm just thinking about it because I've been looking at ads for the new movie on the Internet all day. I'll probably end up seeing it (even though I see way too few movies lately) because it's an event film and I enjoy those, but he never was my favorite. He's too perfect. Give me someone I can understand.

Summerfest

Independence Day - 4th of July
2:30 - 3:45 PM
Leinie's/US Cellular/WLUM Stage

Celebrate your 4th the right way, with Sunspot.

It's your patriotic duty.

Great weekend

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who came out to the King Club on Saturday night and made it an amazing show for us. Ben was hurting a little because of a softball/gay love injury that happened to him last week, but he came through like a champ. And everyone in the crowd came through too. We made a lot of new friends on Saturday night and I hope that we see everyone again at the 10th Anniversary Party in July at Capital Brewery. It's going to be more of an appreciation event and it's FREE, so we want to make sure that everyone knows how much that their support and friendship means to us. It was an absolutely killer time on Saturday and I wouldn't trade that feeling we got on stage for anything.

Big Fur and Government Zero played their hearts out. Thanks for a great show, you guys really picked it up a notch and I loved sharing the stage with musicians I really respect. It's nice to be able to enjoy a great show with quality music as well as performing. An extra Uff-da! for that.

Then the party afterwards, I never thought we would have killed that quarter-barrel, but we did and I'm proud of you all. I still have a sunburn from hanging out on the porch until way after dawn (see picture below) and it was worth it.

This weekend we'll be waxing and relaxing but we'll be back hard in July to (in the words of the mighty D) rock your fuckin' socks off!

Wendy's DrummerCam: Saturday 6/24/06 @ The King Club, Madison, WI

Fire!

Holy crap. My truck started on fire outside of target. I had been meaning to get a replacement hook for my battery strap, but instead I let it go and it created an arc welder out of one of the terminals and one of the wires. We got everyone nice and toasted at the grillout before pushing it across mineral point road in the middle of the night to Meinecke. $170 later, the flying V is ready to roll again!

Blues Connection with Glenn Davis

...playing on a PERFECT night for the beer garden!

Tomorrow's Shows (6/24)

We'll be playing acoustic in Tenney Park in Madison tomorrow around 5pm. It's supposed to be nice weather and it's going to be a laidback party, so start out the party early, come down and say hi, and then let's invade The King Club.

Also, if you missed the Club Tavern two weeks ago, we'll have a couple of new songs for you that we've been brewing up. Ben's been running a music camp for the past couple of weeks and I've been doing a ton of writing, so expect a bunch of new material in July when we can come together and coalesce the new material. Is "coalesce" even the right word to use? And the answer is yes! I'd link to the definition, but my internet connection is iffy right now. Anyway, I can't wait for everybody to hear the new material, we've been trying to experiment a little more and I like the directions we're going in. Trying to balance between songs that are personal, confessional, and not alienating to the listener is a weird balance. Sometimes I think we could do an entire album of just in-jokes, in fact, maybe we will. Anyway, we're looking forward to seeing you tomorrow for TWO shows.

I almost killed a cat in my condo over lunch today too. I didn't see him and I guess he snuck into the inside of the boxspring of the bed in there. When I was looking for him, I lifted the mattress off and then the boxspring. All of a sudden this huge lump comes sliding down the boxspring screaming bloody fucking murder. I just start ripping out of the rest of the cloth at the bottom of the boxspring and he's not moving and yelling, I thought I hung him on one of the springs. And then he stops vocalizing. Uh-oh, I just killed him. I was fuckin' terrified. He ended up running out a few seconds later, but I'm on my knees lifting up the boxspring with one hand in the most awkward position imaginable, reaching for the cat inside the damn thing, trying to get him to come out. Meanwhile the other cats are running under the bed so I can't drop the boxspring back down. If the cat didn't die, I would.

Oh my God, I have cat stories. I guess someone can officially have sex with my butt now.

Repairs to the van

Sometimes the windshield needs a little TLC. Tonight it needs T&A. Wendy and I have to duct tape the windshield to the van. Wendy did most of the work, while I supervised. Hopefully the brakes will make it back to Madison... We're about to soundcheck.

Adam and Steve

The Senate rejected the gay marriage ban today.

I don't like to get political that often because I think a lot of politics is just worrying about things that we can't change, but this is something we can. Why are we still talking about this? The family system started destroying itself long before gay people wanted to get married. It started destroying itself as soon as we started basing every marriage purely on romantic love instead of practicality and what's good for the family. Romantic love is hard to keep exciting for thirty or forty years, people fall out of love as quickly as they fell in. It's part of the human condition. People believe that they should be madly in love with their spouses for every second of the marriage and when they don't feel like that anymore, then there's guilt for feeling that way and that just multiplies the problem. Anyway, romantic love has a lot to do with chemicals and not a lot to do with rationality and when we trust our chemicals over our logic- people do stupid things. Does this sound like a defense of arranged marriages? It kinda is and it kinda isn't. That's a different path entirely.

I'm so sick of hearing about the family, about saving the family. A male and a female might be the traditional way of doing things, but there are people that don't fit in traditional categories. Those people don't deserve to live half-lives. They deserve to live a happy life ad as long as it's not hurting anyone else. It's our job to leave them alone.

I'm ashamed that the President of the United States would make this a priority. Does Karl Rove think that the only way to get people to vote Republican this November is to incite them over social issues? What about doing the right thing in Iraq? What about trimming the budget? What about changing the Byzantine tax codes or draconian drug laws? If you want people to vote for you, then start making positive changes! If you're doing a good job, they'll want you to continue. Why does it have to be wedge issues to garner attention? Why do we either have to have socialists or theocrats? How about a respect-Americans-to-live-free-and-leave-people-the-fuck-alone-icans?

That's why the federal government is good for defending the country and not much else.

It just makes me sad that we're in the twenty-first century and we're debating issues that should have been decided decades, if not centuries, ago.

The Number of the Beast

Well, today is 6-6-06 and I guess that only happens once every hundred years. It was a cloudy one today, but nothing too exciting going on. There's no fire in the sky and no demons running all over like in Doom. You can never put too much in the symbolism of dates, but it is a good excuse to party. I might go see The Omen, I did think the original was badass. Especially because the crazy priest was played by Patrick Troughton, the second actor to play the Doctor. And it had David Warner and he'd be an awesome villian even if he was playing a Teletubby. Remember Time Bandits?

Anyway, I haven't had much to say lately. It's been hard to remote blog because Versamail is broken on my Treo and I haven't spent that much time in front of a PC because it's summer, baby. We don't get a lot of fantastic weather in Wisconsin, so this is the time of year to enjoy it. I'm not much of a Winter guy (in fact, I kind of abhore it) so we have to enjoy the Sun while it's here. Not that I can get too much of it or I become a lovely shade of dark pink. The worst sunburn I ever got was Mexico, where my skin bled. Yeah, you read that right. It's hard to be all "Girls Gone Wild" when your skin is bleeding.

Oh well, I'm actually going to try and be productive for the rest of the afternoon, so have a Happy Satan Day and I hope The Devil gives you everything you deserve this year.

The World As We Know It is Over (again)

I was watching VH1 this morning and we've come full circle. The lead singer of the band (don't know what the name is) had an emo haircut so out of control it might as well have been Flock of Seagulls.
